History

Once upon a long time ago, there used to be 2 bowling clubs in Totnes. The first bowling club, founded in 1901, was called Totnes Bowling Club and was situated on Bridgetown side of the river, just over the bridge on the right hand side. The picture below dates from 1909 when Totnes entertained Torquay. This club folded in 1962.

Totnes Bowling Club History

There is some doubt to the exact date our present club was formed. There is a photo of the Mayor and Lady Mayoress opening the green in Borough Park on 25 June 1923. There is also a letter from AJ Hughes stating the club opened in 1925 and a letter from G Midgely saying the club was formed in 1926! Perhaps the most conclusive evidence is a scroll celebrating our Silver Jubilee in 1950, which "carbon dates" the present club to 1925!
